Data Loggers
SOFREL NEO for wastewater and stormwater is a range of autonomous data loggers designed for permanent monitoring of sewer networks, trunk collectors and overflow structures. The units are waterproof, battery-powered and communicate over M2M cellular networks. They can be installed in manholes and underground structures exposed to flooding, gases and corrosive conditions, with no power supply required.
The range addresses three operational needs. NEO SWW detects and logs overflow events, providing the data required for discharge self-monitoring programs. NEO CWW continuously measures level, detects overflows and can incorporate rain gauges for permanent network diagnostics. NEO WWQ monitors wastewater quality through physicochemical sensors, helping identify abnormal industrial discharges.
In sewer systems, many critical events are intermittent, occurring during heavy rainfall or outside staffed hours. Without continuous measurement, utilities struggle to quantify volumes discharged to the environment, detect infiltration or anticipate when collectors and treatment plants are approaching capacity.
By recording and processing data at the source, SOFREL NEO delivers analysis-ready indicators to SCADA: overflow counts and durations, discharged volumes and level behavior relative to rainfall. This information supports environmental compliance, improves capital planning and allows operations teams to act on evidence rather than estimates.

Wastewater and stormwater collection networks operate under highly variable conditions. In combined systems, during heavy rainfall, overflow structures must temporarily discharge part of the flow to the environment to prevent treatment plants from being overwhelmed. Knowing when these discharges occur, how long they last and how much is released is essential for environmental protection, regulatory compliance and sound infrastructure planning. Yet these locations are typically hard to access, lack electrical power and are harsh environments for electronic equipment.
How it works. Each SOFREL NEO logger connects to field instrumentation: dry-contact overflow detectors, level sensors or quality probes. The unit can also supply power remotely to third-party sensors. It records measurements, calculates application-specific indicators on the device and transmits the data to SCADA on a schedule or when an event is detected.
Overflow detection and self-monitoring. NEO SWW logs each overflow event with its duration and frequency. This builds a documented history that supports self-monitoring reports and highlights the structures with the highest incidence.
Permanent network diagnostics. NEO CWW combines continuous level measurement, overflow detection and rainfall monitoring. Correlating levels with rainfall makes it possible to detect parasitic inflows, infiltration and illicit stormwater connections, as well as identify collectors operating near capacity. These insights guide rehabilitation investments using objective technical criteria.
Wastewater quality. NEO WWQ monitors physicochemical parameters at strategic points in the network. It helps detect out-of-specification industrial discharges and protects biological treatment processes from sudden changes in pollutant load.
Operational value. Continuous measurement reduces inspection rounds, speeds up incident response and replaces estimates with verifiable data. For utility leadership, this means lower environmental and regulatory risk and a stronger basis for prioritizing capital investment.
Integration and scalability. Data consolidated in SCADA can feed regulatory reports, hydraulic models, geographic information systems and asset management platforms. Deployment can start at the most critical overflow structures and expand gradually across the network.
At Marfel, we support utilities with measurement point selection, instrumentation and data integration with their supervisory platform. If your organization needs stronger discharge control or better insight into its sewer network, we would be glad to review your requirements.
